折角なのでセネカ先生にもご登場いただきましょう。2000年前にいいこと言ってますよ、セネカ先生、On shortness of lifeからの抜粋です

So it is—the life we receive is not short, but we make it so, nor do
we have any lack of it, but are wasteful of it. Just as great and
princely wealth is scattered in a moment when it comes into the hands
of a bad owner, while wealth however limited, if it is entrusted to a
good guardian, increases by use, so our life is amply long for him who
orders it properly.

自分なりに訳してみますね。これ原文はたぶんラテン語だと思うんですが、それの英語訳の、そのまた日本語訳、ということになりますか。というか適当に意訳しました。

つまるところ、人生は短くない。短くしているのは自分のせいで、足りないことはないのに浪費しているのだ。有り余る財産も使い手が悪ければすぐに無くなるが、限られた財産でも善き使い手に渡れば増えていくものである。人生もそれと同じで、適切に使えば充分に長いのである。（拙訳）
