The lung is for gas exchange

The lung is for gas exchange

The lung is for gas exchange. Its prime function is to allow oxygen to
move from the air into the venous blood and carbon dioxide to move
out. The lung does other jobs too. It metabolizes some
compounds, filters toxic materials from the circulation, and acts as a
reservoir for blood. But its cardinal function is to exchange gas, and
we shall therefore begin at the blood-gas interface where the gas
exchange occurs.
