EngRishmanは大学の教官でもあるので、卒業式などにもお呼ばれしたりします。というわけで行ってきました。おらが村大学卒業式
というわけで、大学からEmailを受け取ったのですが、こんな感じ
"Good afternoon,
We look forward to welcoming faculty to the 2025 Warren Alpert Medical School procession and commencement ceremony.
The procession will form at 9:15 AM on Waterman Street at Page-Robinson Hall across from Faunce Archway, facing west, running from Faunce House back toward Thayer Street. The division steps off at approximately 9:45 AM and follows the Brown Faculty through Faunce Arch onto the College Green, turning right in front of the Faunce House steps, bearing left on the diagonal sidewalk that runs between Faunce House and University Hall, and then proceeding between University Hall and Manning Chapel and down the hill toward the Van Wickle Gates. We will process through the Gates, move down College Street and turn left on Benefit Street to the front entrance of the First Unitarian Church at One Benefit Street. "
はい、相変わらず分からない単語のオンパレードです。だてにEngRishmanを20年近くやっていませんよ。いや、だから"Procession"って何？というわけで、辞書をひもといてみましたよ、Oxford Dictionary of Englishを
"A number of people or vehicles moving forward in an orderly fashion, especially as part of a ceremony: a funeral procession." (Reference: Oxford Dictionary of English)
ま、儀式の際の行進、という風に捉えたら良いわけですな。実際はこんな感じ
ちなみに commencementも辞書をひもとくと
"North American English a ceremony in which degrees or diplomas are conferred on university or high-school students: [as modifier] a commencement address." (Reference: Oxford Dictionary of English)
というわけで、アメリカでのcommencementの意味合いは卒業式、もしくは学位授与式、となるようです。実際一人一人が名前を呼ばれて学位記を受け取り、医学部長から医学士 (Doctor of Medicine)を表す緑のローブを受け取ってました。
ちなみにConvocationも
"North American English a formal ceremony for the conferment of university awards."
となっているので意味は似ていますが、アメリカでは「入学式」的な意味合いで使われることが多いようです。というわけでおらが村大学のProcessionとCommencementに参加してきましたが楽しかったです。学生の皆さん、ご卒業おめでとうございます！
